The Critical Factors
INTRODUCTION
The Anatahn Alliance and the Rigis Coalition are the mightiest military powers in the galaxy. They are also blood enemies. Both are fighting for total galactic conquest. Down through the centuries, these two powers have conquered innumerable planets. The bitter enmity between these two, their respective internal power struggles, and retaliatory attacks by rebel forces are pushing the galaxy toward its greatest conflict.
Yet, a new situation is emerging. An individual is slowly appearing on the scene. Forcibly taken from his planet, he is imprisoned. In time, he is released only to live out the rest of his life on an alien world. Adapting to this alien culture, his progressive rise within their government allows him to become a central key figure in this conflict.
Ultimately, this individual, an earth human, will stand to defy the Anatahn Alliance and Rigis Coalition. He will be compelled to make the one critical decision that will determine the final outcome of this conflict, thus determining the fate of the galaxy’s trillions of inhabitants. His decision, however, must take into account several events that occurred 284 years earlier in his ancestral past. Four hundred years of tumultuous history is about to unfold.
CHAPTER 1ANCIENT WEAPON
Planet Mentahk (Fourth Galactic Quadrant)
Indigenous Inhabitants: Kumarii
Location: Inside Mount Ikuah on Pazeon Island
“Okaris, hurry” Mikeuh Javeros urges, “he is coming.”
Okaris Romates directs the operations computer to begin the copying process through a makeshift transfer adapter. The computer begins transferring a file of enormous size to a storage crystal. Romates curses at the slow transfer rate.
“Okaris!”
“I am going as fast as I can,” Okaris protests. “This computer is ancient.” Seconds later, the copying completes. Removing the crystal, Okaris puts it into his pocket. He unplugs the makeshift adapter and throws it behind a machine. Both have returned to their terminal stations seconds before Jurderas Leros enters the room. He walks toward Mikeuh. “How much longer? We are due back at the excavation site within the hour.”
“The system is having problems translating the alien code. We need more time.”
“We do not have the time,” Jurderas protests, “we must return to the excavation site before we are missed.”
Okaris interrupts. “We can continue this on our next visit.”
Jurderas become fearful. “Sergis will have our heads if we do not give him an update on our progress.”
“If Thalosian government officials discover what we are doing,” Okaris interrupts, “all of us will be imprisoned.” Okaris trades a brief glance with Mikeuh.
“I should have kept silent,” Jurderas admits. “Billions could die if this device ever becomes operational.”
“We had no idea of what this thing could do,” Okaris concludes.
Jurderas agrees. “This makes no sense. Why would these selothians have built such a sophisticated weapon only to have abandoned it?”
“That is not hard to figure out,” Okaris replies. “When the dalkhans invaded this world, the selothians fled. We were fortunate enough to discover this complex by accident.”
“I find it odd,” Jurderas reasons, “that they built this weapon here instead of building it on their world. Why?”
“That I cannot answer,” Okaris concludes. “Come, we must leave before the others at the site become suspicious.”
CHAPTER 2WORLDS in CRISIS
Planet Erandos (Fourth Galactic Quadrant)
Indigenous Inhabitants: Thenesian
City: Sathrenus
The descending shuttle, Volas, touches down at Quinlas Spaceport. Minutes later, three individuals exit the shuttle to register themselves at the main information building as required by law. Information receptionist Marenn Oth looks up from her station in time to see the three individuals approach her out from the crowd. “Yes, how may I be of assistance to you?”
The tallest of the three speaks first. “I am Renas Ilzares. The two with me are my associates Kra'os Hann and Umaras Salis. We were sent here by the thalosian government with regard to certain trade policy disputes, the nature of which is confidential at this time.”
“No matter Renas, resolving government trade disputes is not my role here. Do you require a ground or air transport?”
“We will require a ferracraft for our travel to the Rollas Trade Building.” Renas pulls out a card and gives it to Oth. She inserts the card into a computer.
Removing the card, she hands it back to Renas. “You will be permitted access to ferracraft F-46a on pad 16.” The three walk outside toward the ferracraft holding area. All board the ferracraft. At the controls, Renas takes the ferracraft and heads east over the city toward the Akarin District approximately twelve miles in the distance. A short time later, the 22-story Rollas Trade Building looms ahead as Renas prepares to set the ferracraft down on the roof. After exiting, all three head to the lift and descend to level 20. As the doors slide open, they are greeted by a startled female.
“Forgive us for upsetting you that way, er…”
“Saria Lenas. I am the assistant to Commerce Minister Mohvus.”
“Yes Saria Lenas. I am Renas Ilzares and these are my two associates, Kra'os Hann and Umaras Salis. We are here at the request of your commerce minister.”
“I see," Saria replies while looking at their badges. “Then you three are from the Enorean Trade Administration?”
“Yes,” Kra’os replies. “At the request of Commerce Minister Faraneur Mohvus, we are here to resolve a number of trade disputes between our two worlds.”
“I agree, yet we were not expecting you for another three days. Why so early?”
“Apparently Saria,” Umaras interrupts, “the gravity of the situation was that Commerce Minister Mohvus felt it expedient to settle this matter much sooner.”
Although still puzzled, she shrugs it off. “Then, the matter is out of my hands. Minister Mohvus is expecting you then?”
“Yes, we are due to arrive in his office shortly.” All three continue down the hallway. Saria continues watching them with some suspicion. With a terse smile, Renas glances back at her. The lift doors close as she eyes them. Renas and his two associates walk to end of the hallway. As Commerce Minister Mohvus’ office is to the left, Renas and his party turn right and walk to the end of the hallway. Each one removes his badge and replaces it with a different badge.
Janon Tyres and Keras Emalh look up from their respective station terminals to see the doors slide open.
As three well-dressed individuals are walking in, the doors close behind them. Although seeing that the badges of the individuals appear valid, Janon becomes suspicious. Standing out of his seat, he approaches them. “Who are you and what is your purpose here?”
With a smile, Renas approaches Janon. He takes a quick look at Janon’s ID badge. “You are Janon Tyres?”
“Yes.”
“I am Renas Ilzares. The two with me are Kra'os Hann and Umaras Salis. We are from Varcinthian Procon on Thalos. We have detected many illegal attempts to gain access to our systems. We have traced this activity to your agency.”
“Our agency,” Janon protests, “is not involved in any such illegal activity. What proof do you have of these charges?”
“I have documentation that proves what I am saying.” Reaching into his case, Renas pulls out a hand masor.
Before Janon can say another word, Renas fires point blank into Janon’s chest. The deadly blue beam does its job. Janon falls to the floor dead. In a state of panic, Keras rises out of his seat. Renas fires again. Keras falls dead to the floor. “Let us get to work,” Renas tells the others as he places the weapon back into his case. Janon and Keras’ dead bodies are dragged into an adjoining room and the door is locked.
Kra'os and Umaras open their own cases. They remove five high explosive devices and plant them at strategic points in the room for optimum effect. “Move out,” Renas orders them. All three casually exit the room and after entering the hallway, Umaras presses the key to close the doors. All three head for the lift. A few minutes later, they are airborne.
A Short Time Later
“Ka’rach! Why is this door locked? Janon! Keras! Open this door,” Ry’lah yells as she continually touches the access screen. A raspy audio signal indicating a fault is her only response. Frustrated, she pulls out a linknome and contacts security. Three security personnel soon arrive at the scene.
“Something is wrong,” she tells Defoan Telkan. “Keras and Janon do not answer and the doors refuse to open.”
“Did you use the correct access code?”
“Yes, six times,” she replies defensively.
Telkan asks her to stand aside as he removes a portable scanner from his belt. A brief scan indicates an anomaly. Adjusting the scanner settings, the display indicates a continuous interfering signal. Looking around, he finally looks above the doorway and sees a device up on the door frame. Reaching up, he grabs the device and switches it off. Keying in the access code, the doors slide open.
Ry’lah, though, is stunned. “Why would anyone place an access disrupter above the doorway?” Fearing the worst, Telkan tells the others to draw their hand masors. As the doors slide open, Telkan and his subordinates, cautiously enter the room. A group of people begins gathering in the hallway. Ry’lah peeks in to see any sign of the technicians.
Opening the door to an adjoining room, security personnel Tynns looks down and is stunned at a gruesome discovery. He immediately calls Telkan and Ellas to the door. All three are looking down at the corpses.
“Contact Enforcer Central,” orders Telkan. “Inform them that we have a double murder at the Rollas Trade Building, level 20, room EA-3.” As security personnel Berolh is talking on his unit, Lo’enz is searching the room when he comes upon a device behind some machinery. Curious, he picks up the strange device and examines it. “Telkan, take a look at this. I found it over there. What is it?”
Telkan snatches the device from Lo’enz and throws it to the floor. “Everyone! Clear this area! We have a bomb!”
Pandemonium begins as everyone begins running. Unfortunately, seven seconds remain before detonation. At time zero, five trinirium bombs detonate. The massive explosion obliterates the entire communications room and rips through the walls out into the hallway. People and objects are hurled against the other wall. Huge chunks of flaming material are falling twenty stories to the pavement below. Traffic comes to a dead halt as total chaos develops within the affected area. Shocked spectators see a raging fire and thick black smoke on the 20th floor.
Umaras waits nervously as Marenn Oth finishes processing his opcard. Three armed enforcer personnel casually stroll past him. Marenn takes notice of how tense the dalkhan individuals appear. “Umaras, here is your card. Do you need any further assistance?”
“No, that is all, as you were most helpful.”
All three proceed to hurry to their shuttle. At that moment, enforcer Da’nas is standing a short distance away. His com unit begins sounding. A few later, Da’nas, accompanied by other enforcers, are rushing toward the shuttle. Umaras and the others are a few feet from the shuttle entrance when they hear a loud voice from behind.
“Halt you three! Stand where you are! I said halt," enforcer Da'nas yells. As Umaras and Renas begin drawing their hand masors, three enforcers begin firing their masors. As Umaras and Renas are cut down, Kra’os barely makes it into the shuttle and closes the hatch. Quickly activating the shuttles’ defensive weaponry, he aims the veson cannon in the enforcers’ general direction. Enforcer Da’nas orders everyone to take cover. As it sweeps a quarter arc, the veson beam scorches any object in their path. A fuel storage area, on catching a direct hit, erupts in a fiery explosion.
Panic ensues as people begin running for life-saving cover. As terrified people are running in all directions, the shuttle begins a slow, yet increasing rate of acceleration into the air. After clearing the upper atmosphere, the shuttle enters the bay of the Thavas, an orbiting Rigilian Coalition ship. The Thavas executes a course change taking her out of orbit.
Once clear of the planet, the pilot prepares the ship to make a jump out of the system. Two Erandonian attack ships are closing on the Thavas. The commander yells at his pilot to make the jump. Working feverishly, the pilot activates the jump drive. In a burst of acceleration, the Thavas vanishes into an extraspatial corridor.
CHAPTER 3CONSPIRACY
The extremely hot plasma sphere has acquired a lock and is closing in on its target. Scant seconds later, the plasma sphere impacts the starboard side. The resultant detonation blasts an opening in the ship’s fuselage. Two unfortunate individuals, via rapid decompression, are pulled mercilessly into the cold interstellar void. The serillian crew is fighting valiantly to stabilize their vessel as it continues careening out of control.
As the serillian crew is stabilizing their ship, the attacking ship fires a peshon energy blast causing a rupture on the port side in the engine room. Internal secondary bulkheads fall into place isolating the engine room from the rest of the ship. Three more individuals, unfortunately, had caught the brunt of the energy blast. Now devoid of atmosphere and exposed to the void of outer space, the engine room begins experiencing a rapid drop in temperature. Due to extreme cold, critical systems are failing. The Harafeas is dead and adrift. As ship’s power is diminishing, the commander sends an emergency distress signal to any friendly ship.
Planet Thalos (Fourth Galactic Quadrant)
Indigenous Inhabitants: Dalkhan
Planetary Capital City: Ashlon
Subcouncil Reas Konn’s holographic image brightens in the enclosed communications room. Three dalkhan subtareans are listening attentively to Konn. “Twenty-eight people are dead and eighteen others were wounded due to the attack at the Rollas Trade Building in Sathrenus.”
Subtarean members Ha’vas Rane, Iras Gath and Thelsus Ro Ovinns look at each other in utter shock.
“Subcouncil Konns, when did this occur?” Rane asks.
“The cowardly attack occurred seven days earlier, by your time frame. We allowed this much time to pass for Brandos Central do a full investigation,” Konn replies angrily.
Gath is incensed. “Surely, you cannot believe that any of our government representatives would dare be involved in such an appalling and senseless act!”
“Subtarean Gath, that was our initial conclusion. However, further investigation had revealed some highly disturbing facts, facts that pointed to dalkhan involvement.”

; “What facts, Subcouncil Konns?”
Konns pauses briefly. “The identification cards carried by your representatives…”
“Alleged representatives!” Subtarean Ovinns interrupts.
“Subtarean Ovinns! Three dalkhan individuals identifying themselves as Enorean Trade representatives possessed legitimate identification cards with the encoded seal of the Subtarean Assembly!”
“ID data cards can be forged and identities impersonated.”
“Noted, but this incident requires that it be investigated and resolved. The guilty party will be found and punished for this act of the wanton slaughter of innocent thenesians.”
Subtarean Ovinns begins frowning. “Are you saying that my government is suspect in this criminal deed?”
“As much as you may find this odious,” Konn reasons, “our options are very few. Despite that present evidence is still inconclusive, I am inclined to come to that conclusion.”
“Why would you even conclude such a thing? This is an outrage!”
“Call it what you wish Subtarean Gath, but we are the ones who are outraged. Innocent people were slaughtered!”
